Questions Every Bible Study Leader Should Ask Themselves Before Leading a Group

Good Bible study leaders share one habit: they ask questions of themselves long before they ask any of the group. The passage matters, of course, but so does the room, the welcome, and the person standing at the front of it.

Leading a group is a bigger commitment than it looks from the outside. There is the study itself, then everything wrapped around it: the hosting, the pastoral conversations that spill past the closing prayer, the evening that started with a school run or a full shift at work. Even small choices, right down to whether your clergy shirt or smart outfit will still feel comfortable three hours in, quietly shape how well you lead.

So before your next session, sit with these questions. Honest answers here make everything that follows easier.

Have I Actually Met This Passage Myself?

There is a difference between preparing a study and being changed by one. Reading commentaries, writing discussion questions, and planning the flow of an evening can all happen without the passage ever landing personally.

Groups can tell. Something in the way a leader speaks about a text reveals whether it has been lived with or merely researched. A useful test is simple: has this passage asked anything of me this week? If the answer is no, spend another morning with it before you spend an evening teaching it.

Every group develops a rhythm, and left unattended, that rhythm hands the microphone to the same three people every week. Most Bible study leaders do not float into the evening fresh. They arrive from work, from parenting, from a day of ministry visits, then rearrange furniture, put the kettle on, and greet the first knock at the door while still mentally somewhere else. Planning ten minutes of stillness between the day and the doorbell is not indulgence. It is preparation.

How Long Will the Evening Really Run?

The study might last an hour. The evening rarely does. Someone always lingers, and that lingering is often the most important ministry of the night: the quiet question by the front door, the prayer request that could not be said in front of the group. Wise leaders budget for it rather than resent it, and they set themselves up to still have energy left when it comes.

Will What I Am Wearing Still Be Working at Ten O'Clock?

An odd question, perhaps, but experienced leaders will recognise it immediately.
